I remember seeing this on Discovery when it first aired, the great lakes can be scary

I've backpacked a lot on the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore which stretches from Grand Marias to Munising on Lake Superior. One year I went in late October with some buddies and got to witness a Lake Superior storm and it was awesome.
Our campsite was about 50 yards back from a 100+ foot cliff that overlooked the lake. In the early evening it started blowing about 40mph and sleeting. The woods sheltered us pretty well from the wind and we all huddled around a fire under a leeward tarp we had tied between some trees. We started hearing these booms that shook the ground and you could feel them in your chest. A couple of us walked up to the backside of the cliff and watched as these huge waves crashed into caves that had been hollowed out at the base of the cliffs. The booms and echos were amazing and scary at the same time.
interesting doc
