I know khun has done solo nobo, chia has done sections of it and chucky was a mod on whiteblaze for a number of years. My wife and I have been talking about doing some stretches here in Maine this summer. The one year anniversary of my FIL's passing is going to be rough this summer, so I was thinking getting some alone time in the 100 mile wilderness this summer might be some good therapy time. Anyone else done it?
p.s. Khun I passed along the message, he said thank-you

checking in. amazing every time i think about what he had to go through. sometimes i think his story has to have been fabricated, at least in parts. you would have to be a frickin warrior to do that. completely insane if you think about it. mind bottling and my mind isn't bottled easily. hope i could pull off something like that if i had to deal with what he had to deal with.

A guy on a fishing board I frequent is doing an extended version of the AT. He is hiking the Pinhoti Trail through Alabama and Ga. to the Benton MacKaye trail and then south to the AT, once at the AT he plans to hike the entire length to Maine. He had a heart attack last year, and got himself back into shape so this is his homage to health. Here is a link to his blog of the event. He started on February 14th, and hopes to make it to Maine by some time in September.

I've done a large portion of it Nobo, and then a 500 miles or so Sobo from NJ. I'm around 40% of the FNST, but all in section hiking.
When I did my Nobo, you could literally hike Springer to Kat for around $2000 and not feel like you were missing out. Now, it's a $5000 adventure at least, with about $1000 in gear if you want to ultralight hike. I havent been on Whiteblaze in a long time, but I have heard many of the hostels are gone due to sue friendly hikers and lawyers looking for cases. That seriously increases your zero-day costs. I used to pay $10 and wash the bathrooms or dishes or cook for a day, get my rest and shower, get a good buzz on, and eat a hot meal all while hanging out with the best people on earth. With the economy the way it is, a lot of "hikers" are homeless people acting like hikers so they dont get arrested.
I can answer any questions anyone might have, at least I can try. I also know the infamous Sgt Rock, and could relay any questions to him regarding the south side of the AT or the Benton McKaye, which he is the author of the BMT Guidebook.

damn i spent over 1k usd just for my tent and backpack and that was more than 20 years ago now. i remember my boots being over 200usd. i'm sure i spent 5k for that trip decades ago. i did buy only top of the line equipment though, some of it like the tent i probably only used twice and ended up shipping home to cut weight lol.

My non food and water pack weight is under 20 lbs.
My pack is the frame from an external that I removed the pack and I lash three silnylon bags to.
One is my kitchen, extras, first aid, etc. The second is my bedroom - bag and hammock. The third is for food. I lash two 2L Platypuses on for water. All of it is covered by a silnylon pack cover.
Now all that varies depending on the length of my trip, of course. If I'm just going out for a few days, I dont carry more than 15lbs total, food and all.
