  1. We’ve lived on 1/2 acre, 18+ acres, a single 7800 sq ft lot, and now a little more than 3 acres, which is perfect. Geography and climate play a role in how much land is needed to comfortably “make a stand” on a piece of land. In Maine, for instance, we required land for not just gardening but for culling and storing wood, e.g. Out here in the Pacific Northwest, it’s a different story. We can get by nicely with a few acres primarily for growing. A well built house out here can create a decent amount of warmth via solar hot water radiant and a little bit of wood, mostly for ambiance. About a 1/2 cord would do nicely. On our single lot it was fine for growing but it could be difficult when the neighbors starting building bigger houses and shading our space (lame). It’s impressive how much can be done on a single lot. A few acres though seems just right!
