A couple weeks ago I posted how we make bread in our crock-pot and I received several questions about it; can you use just whole wheat, do I need to use honey as a yeast starter and do I really need to use wax paper or parchment paper? Well I decided to try and answer those questions by making whole wheat crock-pot bread.
When making crock-pot bread you use the common kitchen appliance to proof your bread dough and bake it all that the same time. Think of it as a cheaper version of a bread machine with the only difference being that you mix the dough by hand. Don’t worry though, it only takes about 12 minutes to prep as seen below.
Ingredients
- 4 cups whole wheat flour
- 2 tbsp melted butter
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 Package yeast or 1 tbsp out of a jar
Gather Supplies
Combine salt and flour into a mixing bowl
Mix sugar and water together
Add yeast and let rest for 5 minutes
Pour yeast mixture and butter into flour
Stir with a spoon
Knead by hand for 10 minutes
Form a loaf and set into crock-pot
Set the crock-pot on high and wait 2-2.5 hours
There was some slight sticking to the bottom
But it was still tasty
That’s all there is to making whole wheat crock-pot bread which has a hard crust but a dense interior. Each crock-pot heats differently though so you may need to adjust your cooking time. Below is another easy bread recipe we make at home often. Have fun in the kitchen!
