seems one of our chickens might have it, I really don't want to perform surgery, but it might be the only option

well my wife decided to make a last ditch effort to get out of this, she called our vet to see if they handled chickens, nope. So it looks like we are operating today.

well, I spent a couple hours getting together all the supplies, after what I went through today to get all this, I am going to build a first aid kit just for the animals

we mixed some epsom salt with hot water to touch

and soaked the chickens feet for 10 minutes to soften them up, do not let the bird drink this!

my wife wrapped her in a towel and held her while I inspected

I took the exacto and started circling the spot, cutting slightly deeper with each pass

it took about 10 minutes and I was able to pull the kernel out

I started trying to manipulate the incision, but I could feel nothing hard, I squeezed the pad on her other foot and it felt the same, I believe I got everything out, but she would not stop bleeding

I was using blue clot, using pads, cotton balls, etc, she had a spurter that I could not stop

my wife started seeing all the blood and asked if everything was alright, I had a flash back to first aid 101

yeah babe, we just need to elevate her foot and apply some pressure for awhile, so I laid her on her back and squeezed with all my might

like this

and she finally stopped bleeding, I was scared there for a minute, it was literally shooting out in a stream like 3 to 4 inches away

so we sprayed with blue clot again and applied ointment to a pad and taped her foot up

and we wrapped it and taped some more

she is currently chilling in the same spot where she came into this family, the dog kennel in the living room

I hope I got everything, I don't want to do this again

so how long do you think you will have to keep her inside?  Do you think she will have to adjust back into the pecking order when she is returned to the flock?
