K -- let's start a separate thread. We haven't put too much effort into house breaking beyond taking the dog out to the bathroom whenever he comes out of his crate. Sounds good but if we put him out on the back deck which is 1 story up from the ground he won't go down the stairs and will be on the deck... sometimes. Also I've caught him peeing under the lean-to we build twice and I think it may have something to do with it being dry and he doesn't like to walk through wet and dewy grass.

He also will play bit or nip kids if they are playing with him and he gets excited. Nothing bad -- it is more than he has he mouth open instead of actually closing his mouth. I gently tap him on the nose and say "no". He doesn't do it with me at all anymore but I catch him doing it with kids sometime.

With more time or research I bet I could help these... but any tips?

we take them out whenever they come out of the crate, every time they wake up and after they eat, if they don't go then they go out 15 minutes later, you can try a pee pad by the door as well in case he has an accident

I'm going to pick up a bell this weekend, it's something I have wanted to try before but never did, I have heard of good results with bell training

as far as the nipping, it's just going to have to be a constant reinforcement from the kids, you already trained it for yourself but the kids need to do it, I know it's difficult for a child because they look at it as playing with their puppy, but a stern no and redirect the puppy with a chew toy or a tug of war cord, the puppy will chew and bite becaus they are teething, it's just getting them to chew and bite on the right things

as far as the wet grass, I just walk them out to about 100 feet from the house and set them down, usually by the time they get back to the house they have done their business

Do you have him on a lead or just let him run when he is outside?

The best thing I've found for peeing is to take the dog out back every time YOU have to pee. They will begin to associate the smell of urine with the backyard. While you're peeing, give the command "go pee" and praise / treat when they go outside.

I am assuming you are not doing this in town 🙂

That's not a bad idea.

One thing we learned to keep a dog from running away is not using a lead outside, we did that with rufus and every time he broke off the lead, he was gone, he wanted to run.

Luckily when we got the pug, gsd and now the frenchies we have a big back yard fenced it so we just take them out and let them run and explore, if they wanted they could go around the sides of the house but it has never been an issue, they just sit at the end of the porch looking, sometimes the pug will go down into the side yard to do his business but he comes right back up onto the porch.

If you don't have a fenced in yard some cedar posts and wire fencing can be pretty inexpensive for a nice 24x24 run to get them trained in

So the last 2 days the dog has been loose in the house and went down to the basement (where we never take him) and went to the bathroom on some rubber mats in a work out area. This is hard to understand because I think the kids are taking him out to the bathroom whenever they take him out of the crate.

K -- it sounds like you handle the pups differently than we do. My wife and kids will default to leaving the dog in the crate unless they want to watch or play with him which is totally different than leaving him out and only putting him away when needed. I blocked the stairs to the basement today to see if it helps keep him from going to the bathroom in the house.

I have seen some puppy training services on Craigslist where they come to your home. I think we should have someone out to help us work through this. The dog has to go a long way to go to the bathroom, it's hard to block off a lot of the 1st floor rooms, and we have carpet. All some challenges for us right now.

Im telling you pork, start peeing in the backyard. Te dog's main sense is smell, and associating the smell of urine with the outdoors is the fastest way to housebreak a pup.

There have been accidents, but very minimal. You bring up a good point though, our house is a big help, we just have the central room and they are blocked off from going anywhere else, plus we have the cement floors.

What is the room right off your back deck?

I've actually been doing this, my wife hollered at me last night for it 🙁
