been looking at a few on amazon, anyone have a good recommendation for a decent starter one to learn on?

These are the two I have been thinking of, they are both about the same price.

I've worked on a Grizzle barrel lathe and it was absolutely great. I would recommend a digital read out for any kind of precision work.

Started/learned on a micro lathe that put out some great parts after we milled some better gibs. Very limited on part size though. Just depends what you're doing.

So would you go with the grizzly versus the hf?

If you have the space and the price isn't an issue, yes. Go Grizzly. Much more universal for attachments and upgrades too.

Anyone know about the emco compact? This just went on CL today.

I am selling a nice Emco Compact 5 Mimi Lathe and Milling machine combo. I am asking $750.00. This tool is in very nice condition and comes complete with all factory parts and many acc. purchased after, also a very nice machinists tool box which includes many cutters, drive belts and tools for the machine. There is cutting oil and about 80 lbs of stock flat and round which includes steel, brass, and aluminum and is stored in the Craftsman tool box. Look at the pics well as everything is in the pics. This machine is not what you find at Harbor Freight, it is Austrian made by Maier+Co. Thank you for your interest.
