Among the first things I need to do with my new property are clear a driveway and building site. The options that I am aware of are to either hire someone with the heavy equipment, or to rent the equipment and do it myself.

At the start, I was supposed to be able to borrow some equipment, but that fell through. My aim is to save as much money on this as possible. I am looking to start an interactive dialog with this thread to consider my options.

Does anyone here have any experience operating heavy equipment?

any marketable timber on your property that you can sell off some? They'll clear out a road to get the wood in and out of and you'll get some money to get started.

No heavy equipment experience here

No. Funny, given how many people have made the very same suggestion, you would think I'd have mentioned that it is not an option. There are far too few trees on the property of desirable diameter.

Also, they tend to make a horrible mess of properties. I've heard some real horror stories.

Yes, I had considered clearing the trees myself and contracting the grading and finishing.

Hmm, come to think of it, I know more than one person that knows how to operate the equipment. I've not actually asked any of them and do not know if they would do it for free or not. But there is the issue of availability for everyone that I know with experience operating heavy equipment. I might be able to get them to help me on a weekend day, but I would have no assurance that they would not have to cancel on me. Either way I'd be paying for the rental.

Cheapest option would be

Couple friends

Couple chainsaws

Couple cases of beer

Would probably take awhile getting the roots out so might need a baco for that.

Thanks but no thanks on the beer+chainsaws. Don't want to take on the liability.

The roots are certainly a big consideration. The majority of experienced people I have spoken with have said the best way is pushing the whole tree over so the roots come out at the same time. I've been specifically warned that removing stumps is WAY more difficult, time consuming, and expensive than pushing the tree over roots and all.

I would hire it out versus renting etc. If you could get the equipment for free that would be ideal, but it sounds like that's a non option now. It's expensive for operators,up here it's 100 a hour, but a good experienced operator can do in 4 hours what it would take me a week to do. I would clear the trees and such, but let someone else put in the driveway, ect
