very nice

When MOTHER EARTH NEWS asked readers for reports about how they built or bought their homes debt-free, their responses were enthusiastic, and each story was unique. From small dome homes to spacious cabins to shelters ten years in the making, these homeowners avoided a mortgage in myriad ways. Many respondents favored stamina over skill, saying that anyone can do what they did with patience and persistence.

We included some of the stories in an article titled Debt-Free Living in Your Dream Home. You can find those full reports, as well as others we received, on this page. Peruse the articles below and let your debt-free dream develop — the respondents’ collective reports are a great starting point for inspiration and advice.

Bumping back in the mix.

I still see the concept of mortgage free as a fringe lifestyle.  Most people don't have the money to plunk down a 100 grand or whatever for house...probably more in most areas.  Nor will they be willing or interested in changing their lifestyle to do so.

Would be hard for most to give up the 2 SUV's and boats etc.

And most just don't see how they could ever be mortgage free...they are beaten down and brain washed into this idea of 30 year debt being 'the way it is'.

In my dad's day 'living within your means' meant a home and vehicle that you could pay for and not have life long debt...today it means 'we qualify for a Mc Mansion' with a three car garage, 4 bedrooms, 5 baths, stainless steel appliances and granit counters...woo hoo.

Most people that I know 'like' what we are doing here, but are also quick to say they would never do it.

We hope to educate and inspire at least a few people.

Rob Roy has a book on 'mortgage free' pretty good read for people that are looking to achieve that goal.

It takes a lot of money to be poor is the way I like to put it. It is achievable but like you said most people don't have the money to be able to do all of it up front.
