When I was on the farm, we just ran it when we were in there. But it took a good 45 minutes to heat up when it was cold. Dad would never leave it on for long, he didn't like the heat on out there, thought it would burn down if it was left on.
I could, I think this would work

Don't know how well it would transmit thought, due to all the cement, rebar and metal roof my house has wireless signals don't work so well, my daughter can't even pick up the wi-fi 30 feet away

Couldn't you leave the heater set to 'on' and just throw the breaker for the shop from the main panel? Red neck engineering. If you ran some additional lines out there for future use you could also put in a throw switch. It doesn't need to be the same gauge or anything as your 240 line.
We leave our garage at 55 degrees and it is perfect. If I am going to work out there I will turn it up otherwise 55 is much better than whatever it is outside. You could probably dial it down to 50 or less and still be fine. Working in a 50 degree space with warm air blowing on you when you crank it up should feel OK.
Not really, the shop has it's own panel. We installed a 200 amp service and ran separate lines to the house and shop with their own 100 amp panels. To be honest I'm really not digging my daughter living above the shop. I woke up in the middle of the night and realized I hadn't plugged the smoke detector back in after we had got done welding and cutting yesterday. The thought of the heater being on and no detector plugged in freaked me out so I got up and ran out there and killed the power to the heater and plugged it in.
