The ZBA states that if you bought it without knowledge...it may be a reason...and there is something about if the use was permitted prior to the purchase...which also applies to me...When I was reading the Charter of the ZBA, I noticed it specifically did not state the word 'grand fathered' as other things do.
Getting the variance is my main goal...but there is a bigger picture here for me and the ZBA...about building what you need size wise, not wasting material on space you don't need, being green basically, and minimizing energy use long term...I don't know if my project will inspire other's in my area to think about these things...but I think it will resonate with some. I got a boy scout troop interested in seeing how simple building is cost effective for home construction and sustainable as well...I got to get some pictures up here for you folks.
Will try to work on that tonight.

Ok, took a few pix at the farm today...let's see if I can give you some perspective on a few things out there...see if I can down load these in some kind of order...
Once you get down the Gravel Road and around the bend you can see some of the raised beds and part of the one orchard. The house will be to the far right of the pic and back a bit.
So, here I have gone a little bit further on the Gravel Road and turned around, it's the same raised beds and part of the orchard as above...just from a little further away.
Here is the build site. See the big rock? That will be the front left corner of the house. The rock is going to be moved, flipped over and partially buried...the one side is really flat, we are going to make it an outdoor coffee table and put a pergola over it and some Adirondack chairs and fire pit by it...I told my wife..."you pound in the stake where you want it, cause there ain't no moving it again" . In front of the pine trees we started another small orchard, the pic does not pick them up - but there are 10 fruit trees there and we will put some more in next year. In the middle of the pic you see a weather road cone, that is where the well will be dug.
This shot is just to the right of the one above...see, my Gravel Road goes on...The pic does not really do justice to distance and size (hey it was cold out)...but kind of the back right, the grey lump is 1 of 2 slash piles from excavation from last year, it's about 100'x75'and 15' tall
