If I may share a link here.. just in case you haven't seen or worked with the logosol. Amazing machine for a low-end budget. Extremely versatile and very light and convenient to move. I've owned 3 in the past and wish I had one now!

This is not a high production mill, but for the homesteader with time to burn, it's hard to beat. Love them (and no, I don't sell them) 🙂

Many of my past students owned or shared one

I've seen those before, they look pretty slick but I don't know if I could justify the price

Very slick...the price would blow the tool budget for several years...I would still like one...reality for me is more like a chainsaw mill.

The justification is this :

If you total up the planking costs you would have without a sawmill at your disposal - include everything : shuttering, bracing, sub-flooring, finish-flooring (upper and lower levels), roof sheathing, fascia and barge-boards, log-leveling and flattening etc. you'll more than likely come to a figure that surpasses the cost of a logosol. The resale value of a 2nd hand machine (hen's teeth) will surprise you - more often than not, you'd find a good reason not to sell, but if you need to, it's an easy task and more often than not, you will come out with a positive balance (in your pocket).

I had occasion to facilitate the quick sale of a logosol unit 3 times over - for the original purchase price (this over a period of 10 years).

The weight and simplicity to move or transport the machine is it's biggest asset - no taking it apart and one person can load it onto a small vehicle or pick-up.

Two people can carry it into the forest with ease - at roughly 100lbs

The down side is that this is not a production machine if you intend to sell planks... I could do between 18 and 20 2x6's in a day on my own, with 8 to 12 inch logs - that's manhandling the logs alone. To be in a remote locale and have the ability to cut ultra-thick to ultra-thin planking as needed offers self-sufficiency.

Dealers usually do demo's, cut a couple planks and see if you don't catch the addiction.. 🙂

I began with the older originals, but have used the Farmers this past Summer... either does the job, one has more bells and whistles 🙂

Here is a 'short' log cabin.  Great story of hard work.  ...she had to build it twice!
