not a really good time for this to be going into affect, wonder what impact it will have

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — More than 1 million low-income residents in 21 states could soon lose their government food stamps if they fail to meet work requirements that began kicking in this month.

The rule change in the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program was triggered by the improving economy — specifically, falling unemployment. But it is raising concerns among the poor, social service providers and food pantry workers, who fear an influx of hungry people.

Recent experience in other states indicates that most of those affected will probably not meet the work requirements and will be cut off from food stamps.

For many people, "it means less food, less adequate nutrition. And over the span of time, that can certainly have an impact on health — and the health care system," said Dave Krepcho, president and chief executive of the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.

Advocates say some adults trying to find work face a host of obstacles, including criminal records, disabilities or lack of a driver's license.

What really sucks about this is that even though official unemployment rates are low, they are only that way because of how they are actually calculated. Truth is, we have the worst labor force participation rate in decades.

It's started in my area.  We know someone that is on SNAP and she got a letter a couple of months ago telling her about this and that her benefit would be cut between 25 to 50 percent.

I know food stamps/SNAP is controversial...but a reduction in amounts will not be a good thing for the most vulnerable individuals.

I have no issue with it as long as it is used correctly, up here it is a multi generational issue where you have families that game the system for decades.

I love when people bring race into it, Maine is 98 percent white and is one of the largest welfare states in the country so that argument gets thrown out the window.

I agree, When used correctly.  I have seen people go int and buy $75 worth of stakes, walk outside and sell the bag for $20.  Happens a lot around here. But I know that a lot of families do depend on the assistance, too bad they get a bad rap due to the abuse of the system by some.

Big thing up here is buying cases of soda or water, going into the parking lot, emptying them and returning for the deposits.
