My understanding is that the Central Valley has a good climate for growing, but never had the water it needed to farm on such a big scale ... that water was piped in from other area's.

Makes me wonder yet again if people in suburbia planted a couple of fruit trees in the yard and put a few tomato plants in pots on the patio if we could reduce our dependence and demand on commercial agriculture a bit.

Cadillac Desert is a good read on what Mulholland did to California, they made a documentary of it as well.
