I'd love to be debt free; we are getting there slowly but surely. When we sold the last house, we made a decent profit on it and were able to pay off over $40k in student loans and put over 20% cash down on our "new" place. Sometimes I am hard on myself and wish we were debt free now, but then I remember that I am one of a few 30 year old guys out there with two degrees, no schools loans, and only a home mortgage for debt... So I guess we are making progress, but it just seems so slow to get there.

The idea of not being shackled to house payments seems like a game changer. Hats off to all of you there already.

That is excellent to read Jonathco - that you are on the right path and plan too. We got rid of our mortgage by selling our second house and then applying the 'capital' towards the next (homestead) place that we totally built ourselves (4 hands 2 brains and a few tools). The sweat equity paid off handsomely and our next house was paid for as it was built with funds left over for investing and retirement.

I was in my early 30s when we 'checked out'. And both my husband & I had AS type of 'degrees', but our real value came from being able to think and DO what was set out for us. I even went 'consultant' solo charging more $$s than I ever would have imagined possible. But it was easy to leave that behind in favor of using 'idiot sticks' (aka hand tools) and doing exactly what we wanted how and when we wanted to. Have to say I sincerely feel we learned and accomplished MORE on our own than we ever would have done in any job - 'high level' or not!

IF you made another move - how do you envision it to be?

I'd like to move again; one more move with some farmland and no debt. I'd like to quit corporate America once we are debt free, and then spend the rest of my life farming - no sprays/chemicals, just natural food and a simple life. It's funny, I spent years working through school to get a good paying job; now that I have it, I dream of simple living. As most of the guys and gals on here know, my biggest barrier there is that I am also a diabetic (type 1); good health insurance is a near-must for me. Self-employed would be rough on the wallet.

you still got time Jon, I was up to my eyeballs in debt at your age and went through bankruptcy at 26

Your doing good Jon! Just wreck that mortgage and make house more efficient as go along 😀

I was hoping to be debt free with the house done by 30.  I'm 36 now.  WE did have a period of time a four years ago before we bought said 32k kubota that we were debt free..but we would have had to have earthwork done and while maybe renting would have been an option...our erratic schedule and hours makes for a akward match with renting companies.  It created stress though... made me realize again how i don't want to be in debt any more.

  I dream of simple living.

Jonathco, one thing I've learned about independent living is that its not 'simple' at all! In fact requires lots of INTERrelated consideration and requirements (time/$-wise). However when one does by and for one's self, the rewards are unlike any $$$ ya can get paid for 'work'!

Perhaps saying something like ' I really want to live more direct and self satisfying' could be more accurate? Just a thought.

My personal motto - The Home, a peace worth fighting for.
