My gf and I have been talking about options for building something in the next 2 years. The money I had saved up unfortunately isn't there anymore, so I need to do some saving (which should be easy with her starting work in a few weeks.)
Our plan is to have an apartment near the city, with a (potential) homestead-ish cabin in a more rural area.
A visit to KVR's helped convince her that I wasn't crazy for wanting an earth sheltered home, and that we could design something that met both our needs. The place will be rooted in an Earth Sheltered philosophy, with some more conventional adds. We even have a friend of ours who's going to help us design it.

I have a couple of questions for you. Do you have any more pics of the inside and how the lay-out is? If you already posted them elsewhere a link would be fine.
Also, is there any part of your daily life that costs more with this house than your traditional one? Just like normal expenses, utilities, wood, etc?
Would you be able to live in your house just like you do now if you & your wife both worked a full 40hr/week job? Or is it too time consuming?
If you had to leave town for a week how much trouble would it be for you? How often would someone have to come by and feed the animals, etc? Any other tasks that would need to be done while you were gone?
Sorry for all the questions but my mind tends to lean towards the logistics of things.
Thanks for the info! So do you have central air? If not, how does your house perform in the extreme heat?
When you say you would go with a traditional roof, do you mean a shed roof to mimc an earthship or a normal gable roof of a traditional house?
Thanks!
No central air, the house maintains about 10 degrees cooler than outside air temp due to the earth berm
I would have gone with a normal gable roof to help shed snow
welcome to the boards J

Hey doode, i had reposted the complete build here, there are pics of the interior near the end of the thread

No, if anything it is cheaper living in the house, our utility bills are a fraction of what we had in our old house
the biggest time consumer we have is our projects, once those are complete there really won't be a lot of time consumed around the house except for our gardens, the animals only take a couple of minutes to take care of a day
Usually if we go somewhere my father watches the animals for us, if we are all gone then we have to board the dogs and have someone come by once a day to feed and water the pigs. The chickens are usually good for 3 to 4 days with the water container we have for them and we fill their feed container once every 2 weeks.
Hope you are well
