I live in southeastern Ohio and we rent our current homestead. I have been looking to buy and I cant seem to find what im looking for around my area. Land around here is on sale at 8K an acre most plots are much more. One down the road is 11 acres for 210K.

I would like to have much more property than that. I have always wanted to have a large area for hunting body of water (stream, lake, pond, etc) an area for the farmstead with pastures around 100 acres total.

So ive started looking at the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and some surrounding areas. Ive found many places that are 70-120 acres with a cabin or home for under 120K

Does anyone on here live around this area?

Or have other suggestions on cheaper land with what im looking for?

There are many such places but there are some considerations. Will you need to work? Many of these homesteads are far away from good paying jobs. Will you need access to certain stores or population centers? Many of these places are far away from such things. Also, many if these areas might have people on welfare which can lead to a certain mindset or type of neighbor. We ran into this at our cabin. Just some things to consider.

Reply with more questions. I love Michigan.

I was looking at Baraga and Ishpeming and some surrounding areas. Location will be more important for my wife than I. I wouldnt mind working somewhere part time and she would like a town/city to be within a reasonable distance.

Ive only been to michigan once and it was for the military.

Im wide open to suggestions and thoughts.

Yes I was/am a machinist but currently I work for the City building department.

Id like to retire making tables, benches and other furniture from my own mill and lumber supply on my land.

Michigan's upper peninsula is an amazing place. I spent a number of years trying to convince the Mrs. to move to the U.P.; land is cheap up, people are sparse and it's stunningly beautiful. Having said that, Like Pork mentioned, the downside is that there are hardly any jobs up there and the ones you find are very low pay. The economy up there died out when the mining/logging boom went bust, and today is largely based on tourism and a few small colleges and universities... Good paying jobs are few and far between.

Also, if you don't like 6 months of snow, you are going to have a bad time up there... Like a really bad time. 🙂

FH, if you haven't already, I'd say take a road trip up there and spend some time looking around. It's gorgeous, just do your research before you make any final decisions about a location... Remember, there are roads that don't even get plowed during the winter; it's that kind of "rural" up there.

Michigan is great; you might consider the upper half of the lower peninsula as well. Lot's of cheap land this side of the Mackinac Bridge.

Thanks for the input ill look at the area you suggested as well.

My thought was before I pulled the trigger on a place was to offer the seller some cash to stay there for a week and see what its like and then go from there.

Ive only been to Grayling and that was for the army so i didnt get to do much sight seeing.
