Several years ago I covered a burglary, where by the looks of things at least two intruders entered the home and started ransacking the place for valuables. It was a very nice home with no shortage of stuff to take. In the master bedroom one of them had emptied the jewelry box into a pillow case, pulled a couple of hunting rifles out from under the bed, moved a huge carboy full of change and generally wrecked a bunch of things searching for the good stuff. It was a split level with the garage underneath. Same thing downstairs, it looks like they went along ransacking looking for stuff to steal until they found a huge old safe. When the owners got home they found nothing but the safe missing. Everything had been left in a central location in the house. The victims described the safe as weighing three to four hundred pounds. The scumbags wrecked a bunch of oak flooring and trim sliding the safe out to the garage area to load it, I assumed into the back of a truck. I guess after they found the safe they figured they must have hit the jackpot and left everything else behind.

The funny part is the safe was empty; it had belonged to the owners late father. After his passing they moved it to their house with the use of a refrigerator dolly and four friends. They just never got around to putting anything valuable in it. It made me smile to think about a bunch of junkies pounding on this safe for what must have been forever waiting for their jackpot only to find it empty.

If I get the chance to pick up an old heavy safe cheap, I will be sure to place it in an obvious location, close to a door in hopes the scumbags will just take the diversion safe and make off with it. If I am feeling creative I may even leave a note inside, LOL
