I will be getting a Ak sometime this year. I have a few zines dedicated to the AK but not so much a buyers guide. IO is right down the road from me and they make AK style rifles not sure if any good or not. Should I go the Saiga route and build myself. What type/brand/country of origin should I stay away from?

Get a Saiga and build it yourself. I prefer the 5.45

Although the stock is horrible in the "sporting" configuration, don't turn your nose up at a MAC 90, if you run across one at a good price.
I got a milled receiver for $ 400, and will put the fit/finish/quality up against any post ban AK and most if not all pre ban . The trigger wups them all.
It is just another option.
