Seems it is under contract, sounds promising

A Seattle realtor announced the pending sale of Ballard's notorious Edith Macefield house Tuesday.

The circa-1900 home, located at 1438 NW 46th St., is famous for its former owner, Edith Macefield, who stood her ground in 2007 while developers built the commercial complex, Ballard Blocks, around the property.

Macefield rejected $1 million to leave because she wanted to stay in her home.

Construction superintendent Barry Martin befriended Macefield, who willed her house to him before she died June 15, 2008, at age 86.

The house also attracted an attempted Disney promotion for its movie, "Up," which led to the ritual of Macefield admirers attaching balloons to the property.

Martin sold the property in 2009 to a company called Reach Returns. Reach Returns owner Greg Pinneo said he planned to elevate the home to the height of the surrounding commercial building and create a two-level open space underneath, with plantings and water features. However, the house went into foreclosure.

The house went to the auction block in March, but it attracted no bidders and was since listed on the open market.

Real estate broker Paul Thomas said in a statement Tuesday that "interest in this property has been off the charts."

The virtual tour on YouTube, posted by Thomas, has attracted more than 733,000 views since March 29.

Visitors to the house have also left messages on balloons there.

Thomas reportedly fielded 38 offers on the property during the three-week listing period.

He scored the offers for their proposed memorial to Macefield, terms and dollar value.

The buyer with the best offer has signed a purchase and sale agreement and has until late May to close the sale.

Meanwhile, details on the buyer's plans remain confidential.

"If the current buyer closes, it will be an incredible next chapter in this David versus Goliath story," Thomas said in a statement.

Thomas pledged to offer additional details should the sale close.
