Ken Lewis, the assistant state attorney who made controversial comments on Facebook about the Pulse nightclub shooting, was fired for violating the office's social-media policy, according to the State Attorney Jeff Ashton.

In the hours after the shooting at the gay nightclub, Lewis wrote in a post that all Orlando clubs are "zoos; utter cesspools of debauchery." He also said downtown Orlando was a "melting pot of third world miscreants and ghetto thugs."

He was suspended last week and fired Thursday.

Ashton wrote Lewis exhibited poor judgment and animus toward Orlando citizens.

"As a prosecutor in this community, Mr. Lewis has the responsibility of maintaining the public's trust through the ability, and perceived ability, to exercise sound, unbiased judgment," Ashton wrote.

Lewis also was disciplined for comments on social media in 2014 when he wished a "Happy Mother's Day to all you crack hoes out there. It's never to late to tie your tubes, clean up your life."

While Ashton defended Lewis' right to make the comments, he instituted the social-media policy last year that said State Attorney's Office employees should refrain from making comments that can be perceived as being biased toward individuals or groups of people.
