I have looked for many books and the like trying to figure out which book or piece of material would help me learn more and more about this subject in greater detail. I've looked for local classes as I believe practical exercises are always the bet way to go with a live person that knows what they are doing. The problem is I have to pay out the ass for an "experience" in the outdoors as well and thats just not happening.

Anyone have a book or certain video that really goes into detail to trap animals? I'm really looking for rabbits, squirrel, and other small game all the way up to hogs.

Thanks

I assume you're looking for primitive methods??  For fur or food??  I don't think there's a whole lot to learn (ie variety of traps), it's just a matter of practice.  For primitive, you have dead fall traps and snares.  You should be able to google them (there a even a few examples on this site), and then you practice, practice, practice.  Also check out Dave Canterbury's Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Dave-Canterbury-Pathfinder/142229423061) and website as he has trapping stuff from time to time.

As far as more modern methods, there are a variety of box traps and snap traps.

One word of warning though is to check your local laws.  Trapping out of season or even trapping in general may be illegal.  Also there are guidelines/laws about how often you have to check your traps.

Do you know anyone that traps now or is there a local association you can contact? You may surprised how many people trap but don't talk about it because it has gained the stigma of being a "dirty" way of hunting. If you could hook up with an old timer and spend some time in the woods with them would be a great tool. A lot of them love to share their knowledge of what many consider is a dying art. Local outdoors store would be a good place to make contacts with people.

When we had our land cut off the logger who is in his 70's asked if he could trap my land this past winter. I replied I didn't know you trapped, he said yeah, not as much as he use to but he still loves to set lines every now and then. He offered to take me out a couple days, still need to take him up on it.

That's what I would love. It's basically knowing how and where. I can make a variety of traps but I would love to have someone who knows what they are doing show me hands on.

A friend of mine at work traps.  I'll ask him to sign up and do an AMA on this thread.
