Crazy story from this past weekend

Moments after a black bear latched onto Christopher Petronino and pulled the Boy Scout leader into a small cave in New Jersey’s wilderness, Petronino could hear him “huffing.” The animal had grabbed his foot and bitten his leg and both shoulders, Petronino later told authorities. He hit it in the head with a rock hammer, turned his back to it, covered his head and then listened to it breathe.

Three young scouts — one of them Petronino’s son — were outside the cave, ready to take directions that would help their scoutmaster survive.

“Petronino struck the bear twice in the head with a rock hammer,” the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Bob Considine said in a statement. “He then pulled his sweatshirt over his head and curled into the fetal position. He yelled to the scouts, who were outside the cave, to leave and go get help.”

Petronino, 50, from Boonton, N.J., was leading his scouts Sunday through a wooded area near Split Rock Reservoir, a 625-acre space in Rockaway Township, some 30 miles from Newark. During their hike, he spotted a small talus cave — one he said he had known about for decades and one in which he had never encountered a bear.

He hiked up a rocky hillside to reach a small crevasse that would lead them into the cave, authorities said; but when he went in, a bear got hold of him.
