Thanks B17
Chia knows more than I do.
I can reallly only speak for that Old Town and that having a unibody is the best bet.
For the paddle, boat, and license it was less than $500.
There is just nothing like fishing from a kayak.

I didn't know you lived that close to me QCDog. I wouldn't buy the one in the craigslist ad.
If all you are doing is fishing, then you can get by with something shorter in length, like what B has. If you plan on doing camping trips, then look at something at least 12' long. You might be able to check out some demo events, although not necessary, it gives you a better idea of what you want. Also if all you are doing is paddling in the summer, then don't overlook a SOT kayak.
There are a ton of good manufacturers, and a handful of really shitty ones. And you won't see a lot of performance variations in the smaller recreational kayaks, most of them paddle about the same.

~3 hours, but I go to eastern IA a lot fishing and camping. Also in IA, as long as it's under 13' then you don't have to register it. I would anyway:
1. Only a couple bucks a year.
2. It works as an anti-theft device. Your kayaks HIN (same as a VIN in cars) will now be registered with the state and they will give you a sticker to attach, and if your kayak does become stolen your odds of getting it back increase.
3. The majority of the money used for registration goes to help improve accesses and river programs.
