Looking to build a cheap greenhouse? Here is how we used our raised beds as a framework to accomplish this. We had been looking at different methods and this made the most sense and was the quickest.
so like all my projects I went and picked up some wood
and cut a bunch of 4 foot sections
and started framing out some boxes
and made 4 of them
I really need to do a better job of cleaning out the beds in the spring
we stood up a section and butted the edge to the outside of the raised bed and screwed it down
and stood up another and screwed that down and the two together
and repeated the process on the other side
I cut and assembled two 4×4 sections
and screwed them down and framed out a door and screwed a support onto the fence
I cobbled together a ridge beam
and screwed that down to the top of the door and the support
I just needed to put some supports for the top, wrap it in plastic and throw on a door and I’ll be good to go, probably going to let the chickens run wild in it for a week or so to clear the beds for me
I was hoping to finish up the next day, but winter came back, time to wait
the weather was finally cooperating with me, so I went and grabbed some wood
and cut them to length and screwed them down
and started covering it with plastic
I got everything stapled down
So we finally had a couple nice days of weather, so I picked up some chicken wire and some wood
I wrapped the bottom of the plastic, to keep any predators out and to keep the chickens in
I trimmed out the plastic from the doorway
and my dad started trimming and stapling the end
while he was doing that I grabbed a couple scrap 2×6’s I had
and attached some cross pieces
and attached it to the side, the chickens roost is ready for when I move them down here
I threw a thermometer inside, not to shabby for being 42 degrees outside
I cut out a frame for the door
I stapled down the plastic that I trimmed
and some more wire along the bottom
I stood it up in place and used some eye hooks to keep it in place
and it was done
We moved our chickens down the next day , it was a little stressful for them, but they start digging right in
Good idea with the chickens. I know a guy who does something like that with pigs. He cleans out his garden which is next to the pigs. When he harvests he just has to open one latch and the pigs can now get into the garden area. They leave NOTHING behind. Then they go off to slaughter.
Your chicken fencing gives me an idea for my little garden!
Nice B! If it weren’t for the dogs I would like to do the same
With some large trees that fell over during a heavy wet snow a couple years ago. I laid them as the foundation then buy attaching 16 foot livestock wire pannels to them and covering it in plastic I.v got a very inexpencive and sturdy green house with no worrys of livestock or dogs being able to damage it .we could have made the planting beds on the floor but due to my age and bad back built beds 3 feet high and 6 inches deep with plywood and boards with logs for support 4 years so far and only have to replace the plastic but if I had bought the proper type instead of cheep construction plastic it would have been unnessary.
outstanding, have a pic you can share?
Also from Michigan but the Upper Peninsula. Does anyone have any ideas for how to modify this greenhouse to stand up to feet and feet of snow? My parents have a portable carport that was crush by snow last year. It was cylindrical and I’d like to build my mom a greenhouse this summer.
I think the only option would be to remove the plastic each winter, if you are trying to winter harvest I would go with a hoop house, click here to see how we did it in raised beds
