Here is how we built a pallet coop for our ducks, I had picked some up that were left over at the farmers union and they were getting big, and I needed to move them into something a little bigger. I had a pile of pallets laying around and decided to use them.
So I grabbed several and dragged them down to the pond
I noticed one of the pallets had a cracked board, and I thought to myself, self, that would make a great doorway
so I grabbed my circular saw and trimmed off the broken board
I stood it up on the base pallet and screwed it down
I took another pallet and stood it up on end on the outside of the base and the front wall and screwed it into the base and the edge
and did the same on the other side
I then stood up a pallet in the back and screwed it down into the base and the sides
I needed access for feeding them and such, so I used my saw and cut a access hole into the back
I had a scrap piece of osb from when we built the barn
So I grabbed my redneck straight edge (grade stake) and marked out the height and width of the opening
I hung a hinge on top
and used a simple eye latch on the bottom to keep it shut
looks good
as you can see the width and height are different on the pallets, so the tops aren’t level. no worries
I grabbed some 2×4’s I had
and cut 3 at 57.5 inches and 4 12 inch sections
I screwed one long one across the back
and framed out a little stub wall
and screwed that down across the front
now I had to figure out a roof, so I was roaming around the property and saw the pig pen
since the pigs are now residing in the barn, they don’t need the roof anymore, so 5 minutes later
and I reused the screws and screwed the roofing down
it’s starting to look like something
next I needed to build a run, so I started walking around looking for something, when I noticed my raised beds, I don’t need the hoop houses right now
so I ripped out several sections of pvc
and went and shoved the pvc into the ground every so feet to create a tunnel down to the pond
I grabbed some chicken wire I had
and started wrapping the pvc, I used zip ties to attach the wire
I had some company watching me, I hope the wild ones aren’t going to be a issue
I extended it about 3 feet into the pond so the ducklings can play in the water
and wrapped the outside with wire as well
I’m going to break some pallets apart tomorrow and cover the gaps and paint
I’m pretty happy with it
we filled it with straw and put their food and a water dish in there and their light in case they need some warmth and moved them into their new home
shh, their sleeping
That’s very cool! Thanks for sharing!!
