Here is how we made our cheap chicken tractor. We had been letting the turkeys free range in the yard but it was becoming a issue, they were wandering a little to much for my liking, plus the amount of poop all over the deck was a little out of control, so I decided to move them back into the coop, first I needed to make something to put the broilers into, I had a stack of 2×4’s in the barn, so I grabbed them
and cut some 24 inch sections
and screwed together a framework
and repeated it 3 more times
I hauled the sections down to the yard and screwed them together
and put in some cross braces on top
I had some wire left over from the duck house, so I wrapped the outside with that
and took the fabric from the trampoline that got destroyed this spring and stretched it over the top
I picked up some carabiners
and hooked the loops of the trampoline and connected it to the chicken wire
I moved the birds over to their new digs
and will move it every couple a days, now I just need to rodeo the turkeys into the coop!
*update*
It’s been working well, we just drag it 8 feet to a new spot every day to give the broilers fresh grass and bedding. We are pretty happy with the results.
I free range my birds, but they tend to stay around the roost.. I need to let the penned area rest for a while…Tom
How are the 2x4s holding up over time? I went with pressure treated so they would last. I am curious to know after being out in the weather are your boards in good shape? Might effect how I do things in the future. Thanks.
Hey John, they seem to be holding up fine, I will probably be able to get 5 years of use out of it at least before I will have to replace it.
How does this set up hold up against wildlife trying to get at your chickens ? I have Coyotes that sometimes pass through my yard. Is it heavy enough to stay put ?
