For people trying to start being self-sufficient one of the largest tasks to overcome is how to process a chicken. Chickens are a gateway animal to other cute little fury things that you may decide to raise. I’m not trying to be a jerk, but people that have never raised a animal for food before need to realize there is a difference between fido and dinner.
It is very easy to fall in love with a animal that you raised from a baby, heck, there are three chickens that we have that my wife has totally set off limits, and I’m fine with that. They are her girls.
Yet you need to be able to step away from that and realize that you gave them the best life you could and you did that for one reason. To eat.
A chicken is the easiest animal to get started with. That does not mean that you can just throw some feed and water once a week and they will be fine, but compared to a lot of other animals, they are a good way to get your feet wet so to speak.
Here is a outstanding video on a humane and respectful way to slaughter and process a chicken from the Zenger Farm in Portland Oregon.
