If you are thinking of adding livestock to your homestead this year than a hay feeder is something you might want to invest in to help keep feed waste under control. Commercial units can be expensive but you can easily build a pallet hay feeder that is simple to build and uses wood pallets that you can usually get for free.
Materials Needed:
- Pallets
- Screws
- Piece of 2 x 4
The feeder takes roughly two hours to build and only needs a couple of cuts to form the framework.
If you do decide to tackle this project, be sure to find pallets that are stamped HT for heat-treated; which is the method used to preserve the wood in the pallet. The other method is Methyl Bromide fumigation which creates a health risk and should not be used for wood-working projects or firewood. You can follow step by step instructions below. Good luck with your animals this year.
