Steve,

Would it make sense to replace the bike rime with a pulley like this?

that way you could use a regular automobile belt instead of the rubber bands?

Or you think it would be too heavy and create too much drag?

Great suggestion! I thought the same thing. Problem is that I couldn't get a pulley as big as the wheel (bigger wheel = more RPM's at the generator) and a v-belt ended up slowing it way down - too much friction. I actually tried it with a pulley/v-belt just like the one in your link.

Believe it or not, the large rubber bands only cost me $1.50 at my local hardware and work much, much better.

Thanks for the comment.

Steve

Good to know, been looking at your other videos, is 152 volts the max you have been able to get out of it?

That's the max I've been able to get out of it, but if you search "ceiling fan PMA" on Youtube you will find a lot of other experimentors. There are also instructions on how to build your own - which is how I learned. It's a fun project to do with the kids.

What's the best way to keep the magnets from flying off?

The magnets don't fly off at the lower speeds my water-wheel develops. They flew off because I was using the drill to test what I vould get out of it. If I ever have a situation where the PMA is spinning that fast I'm sure just a simple wrap of duct tape will keep them in place.
