or just put an axehead in an bench vise and hammer away....

I watched some of the other videos that were linked after the original one was over, and one guy just welded a splitting wedge to a base.  The thing that is unique to this design is the ring that holds the wood over the wedge.  The other designs required you to hold a piece of wood just below a swinging hammer.
