A barn is probably the number one project we are going to try and accomplish this year. The pig pen and chicken coop we had built last year worked ok for our needs at the time, but we are going to need something a little more permanent. Plus we could use our present chicken coop for turkeys each year for the holiday.
We were originally thinking about putting it in the back field.
But it get's really wet in the spring, we could haul some fill in to build up the area I guess.
Our other thought was to stick it behind the berm. It would out of sight and wouldn't take up most of the field.
Still not quite sure yet though.
Either way the end goal is to fence in the whole back field and use the berm and the fence as a chute
That way it will be easy to let them go back and graze if need be, or run them up for loading and unloading.
I haven't decided how I want to build it yet. My wife got me a sweet rancher for x-mas.
I'd love to go all Dick Proenneke on the barn with logs from our 7 acres but it would be a big change from what the rest of the homestead is.
We have stuck by the dry stacked method and balloon framing with everything else so far though. I will have to contemplate this on the tree of woe.
yes. it might be a little closer to 2 acres but not by much, our property has a very strange shape and hard to get a accurate measure. We are trying to get as small as a footprint as possible. In a ideal situation we would be able to do everything with in our fenced yard which is 180x200 which is under a acre, but the pond takes up a lot of that area
