I think that is what @hessian is going to build, i am building a mini press out of a 20 air over hydraulic jack, a hammer would not be ideal for us.

So we laid out the base on the welding table with soapstone

We set the jack on it to test the layout

We decided on a 12x12 base, not sure how they are fitting it on a 10x8

We set up the band saw to cut the tubing

an example of how long it takes the harbor freight band saw to cut through 1/4 inch tubing

https://youtu.be/BvGVgoTNjEU

got the 6 pieces all cut

cut the end pieces and top plate

the plasma does an awesome job

trimmed the top plate

tomorrow we will grind and weld the base together

Picked up a vice today for the drill press, should help with drilling the pin holes for the adjustable top anvil

Hess, you think I should stick with the c channel die design or just use the retaining bolts across the face of the dies? That seems safer to me for some reason.

In the end it is all about the dies, just like a wood shop is eventually all about templates and jigs.

Not sure if I understand the question, imo it is safer having less metal to fatigue and break. If the c-channel will sit without extra reinforcement I'd probably go that way. Since it will take a lot to break the c-channel but a bolt can sear and break ... go flying.
