So I promised to post some pics of my new privy. We built this baby in a weekend and I finished up the door and paint with the help of the wife and kiddos the following weekend. The dirt at this site is full of rocks and rubble. It looks like to me that this area was glaciated and what was left behind is a lot of flint, limestone, fossils. we're a good 400 feet away from any running water for this installation and the terrain is situated at the bottom of a valley. Even with this there's no real concern for flooding as the creek beds are far below the grade of this site.

As for the use and care of the privy, so far so good. It gets very light use for now as we're only at the property on the weekends we can commit to getting away for the entire day or longer. With the soil make up we have been adding a scoop of organic compost to the pit after each use. Hopes are that this will assist with breakdown. Essentially we're doing an in place humanure system only if our pit starts to fill we'll cover it with topsoil and move the house to another pit.

What are some of the design ideas others have done?

It is pretty remote where we are. When we asked about building permits etc. in town we were told "people around here don't do that."  After hearing that we just went for it. I do know that there are several outhouses throughout the same valley still in use. This is certainly not an official stance from any governing body, but we were responsible with our implementation.  We understand the risk and should some inspector come ask about the house we will deal with it at that time.   :-)

I know this is a bit old. Do you have plans for this? Or did you just wing it?
