Want to store some food items in 5=6 gal pails for longer term storage that I can put away and not worry about for 5-10 years (or more).

Anyone here have a good resource on how to do this.

...Like taking bulk rice..beans...grain... breaking down in into 5lb portions and packing away.

I have looked at a number of things on the Net and no two people seem to agree on the process.  Here is the basic process that I have gleaned:

1) break down rice or beans into 5 lb portion

2) put in Mylar bag with O2 absorber

3) seal Mylar bag (no body seems to agree on how to do this)

4) put Mylar bags into 5-6 gal pail and add a desiccant pack in the middle

5) what on the top, (can you use the original lid or should you buy gamma lids?) label it, done

....have I got the basic idea?

we do it in canning jars, it gives us the right portions for meals plus it's always good to have extra canning jars on hand

a great video series

you can just use a vacuum sealer on the mylar bags

some people will freeze their grains and such before sealing to kill off any bug larvae

I would go with the gamma lids

Thanks!

Didn't know about dry goods in the mason jars.

I like the Dehydrated foods in Mason jars.

I have read all sorts of stuff on dehydrated foods and storing them...some say a zip lock bag is fine and will keep things for 1 to 3 years...other's say mylar bags only.

When you use the mason jars and the two lids...can you re-use the lids?

Yep, just to be careful when removing them so you dont mess up the lid, they are on pretty tight

The Mrs has been interested in a Food Saver...I see they can do the bags and jars all in one now...Time to do some research.
