Chicken murder is afoot North Texas. For quite a while I'd been letting my ladies range around the yard all day. Well they've been escaping the yard and it got one of them killed by something. I don't know what exactly, but I found a pile of chicken feathers and no chicken. I decided they need a run to keep them safe while I'm working. See below.

I built the frame in one afternoon, but could have done it quicker. I just used 8' 2x4s. Everything is either 4' or 8' so there weren't too many cuts. Its wrapped in chicken wire and stapled down with a pneumatic nail gun. Easy and functional. Hopefully the ladies stay safe now.

The cedar oil worked pretty well all things considered. The fleas haven't come back since its been warm again. I saw some a couple weeks ago, resprayed the house with cedar oil, and haven't seen them since. I'd recommend it even though its crazy expensive. Using that hose sprayer, you end up wearing as much of the stuff as you spray. Cedar oil leaves your house smelling great. Hell, people make closets out of it. Just that alone is worth the price difference. I can't imagine having that much poison all over me and my house/yard.

ya the weather has been glorious here for the last 10 days. All the grass is back and its a comfortable and bugless 70 degrees. Don't talk to me about weather in August, but this is a good time of year to be a Texan.

Only 3 birds :( We started with 6. Two got murdered one night in the coop. We then shored up the coop, but the most recent one got killed roaming in our neighbors yard.

One of our friends has a couple hens he doesn't want. He says they're still laying, but I don't know if I want them. Our ladies have really been producing since the last murder. I think the one that got killed was the fat bitch that everyone hated. She used to peck at the other ladies. I liked to think she kept them all safe, sort of like a butch hen, and she died protecting the rest of the flock.
