I believe Roku does NOT have a monthly charge. You just invest in the box. Now you still have to pay for Netflix if you want to have that service.

Not sure if you saw it KVR, but there was recently a thread on the UG about it.

The top thread, one of the guys advises against a premade box and suggest going with a laptop.  And if you're determined to get a box, then the Amazon Fire TV seems to be the be top shelf as far as specs go.

I've never had it. I rent dvd's from netflix. I don't have high speed Internet. I visit folks who have cable and am amazed that there can be so many Chanel's with nothing on!

The best legal way to do it, is with Google Play and the Chromecast.  You get Netflix and you can buy or rent seasons of many, many TV shows and movies.  We watched The Walking Dead like this.  It was $25 for the season and it was available about one hour after it aired.  Its ours to keep.

You dont get Amazon Prime though.
