Picked up the T/C Venture last Tuesday.... just as I was starting to battle a sinus infection, so I didn't even get it sighted in til Sunday (mounted a nice leupold 4-9x40 rifleman on it). 7mmRemMag is a new round for me, interesting ballistics- long and flat, hits hard.
Yesterday morning.......
MrsMedic - "what are you doing up so early on your day off?"
Me - "I'm gonna go shoot bambi, chop her up, put her in a bag, and bring her home for dinner"
MrsMedic - "Good luck with that"
Yesterday I hit the trail into FS land above my property about 7:20 (late) and started walking (up hill, both ways). Saw some ghosts in the trees early on but by the time I krept up there they were gone. Kept up my blistering 1mph creep up the trail. took a detour after a couple hrs and hiked out to a point to get my bearings sip some water. THAT spot smelled like elk, if you've been in em you know what I mean. They had been there very recently, which surprised me but also got me excite. I was looking for deer but I do have an elk tag too. Found out later that one of my nurses took a nice bull that same day out of the next draw over, so I'll likely be back up in there.
After my break I got back down to the trail and by my 4th step I saw movement. Looked left and had 5 does about 20 yards out. Of course by the time I got settled and my weapon was ready, they had moved on to abut 100 yards. I sat and waited and they moved back in. I took a doe at about 75 with a quartering shot. Not real happy with my shot, but that's on me not the rifle, if performed flawlessly. I hit her just a little farther back then I wanted to, turned out to be a single lung shot. She ran into the thick pines, I watched her disappear but didn't chase her right away, didn't want to pressure her into a longer run then necessary even tho I knew I hit her "good enough". after 15 minutes I went to where I hit her and followed a decent blood trail through the blow down pines for about 40 yards until the blood trail petered out. took me about another 15-20 minutes and 25 yards to find her in the thickets. My first white tail. Quartered her up and packed her home.
At 1PM, standing in my kitchen I sent MrsMedic the following text - "Bambi Down"
I NEED a better pack. Using an old Conterra SAR pack. Just not designed to carry that much weight. I need one of those fancy skinny frame backs before I go back out again, I am sore as hell today!
Anybody else get any meat in the freezer yet?
well a good sign, no one had been out on the land
we were seeing a lot of sign, looks like they had headed from the swamp up across the road to the top of the mountain
the sun was getting low so we decided to hike back up the trail a ways
we sat on some trees that had been cut and piled by our neighbor, using it as a wind break, giving us a clear view on each side of us down the trail and up the mountain, about 10 minutes later we had a doe and what looked like this years fawn come running down the mountain off to our right, we had a clean shot, but we don't feel comfortable taking bambis mom, if it was a doe by herself, that's different, so we waited to see if a buck was chasing them and just watched the doe and the fawn, they must have caught our scent because they were just standing in some pines and wouldn't cross the road, we waited for about 30 minutes and since it was getting dark called it a day, as soon as we stood up the two deer took off back up the mountain, it was a good day in the woods

Anyone using one of these?

After packing out my deer last week I realized I needed a different pack if I was going to get an elk out without killing myself. Was looking at packframes to replace the one I stupidly left behind on one of my many moves back in the gypsy days. Stumbled upon this company and really liked what I saw. Then found out two of my buddies have the same pack and swear by them. So I bought one, and I have to say its one of the best constructed packs I have ever owned. Its a real slick design, can comfortably carry a LOT of weight, and the scabbard is a pretty nice touch (that rifle got heavy!). They make a lot of "tactical" stuff too. Not cheap, but solid with a lifetime warranty.
Anybody have any experience?
