I live in Montana, so even entertaining the idea of being seen with a camel that looks like a goat with downs is a real delicate subject.

But I have recently become pretty interested in the idea of keeping 3 llamas around for packing purposes. And general entertainment. And MrsMedic will get to have livestock that she gets to to name, and pet, and become attached to. Because I don't plan on eating them. Unless they piss me off.

I have read that they are easier on the land then horses and easier to take care of and wrangle. I have experience with horse packing.

Anybody keep llamas as working stock????

I have a good friend who raises alpacas, anything specific you would like to know? I can ask him next time I see him.

yeah, that would be great!

My main question right no is ho much space per critter is appropriate? I have an area on the property that I'd happily fence off and build a shelter and water tanks and al that. But I just don't know if its large enough. Ask him if a long skinny 3/4ish acres would be sufficient for 3-5 llamas. Wouldn't have to graze them, i'd bring in feed (apparently they are cheaper then a dog to feed), but I don't want to pen them up in an area that is too small and makes em nutty.

Thanks buddy, hope all is well

Right back at ya, might take me a couple days, but I'll try to get out to his place to take some pics and ask him

Had a neighbor in Ecuador who raised Ostrich and Llamas.

I hope you like being spit on. Although after a few times it becomes amusing ... kinda.

They seemed like really easy going animals, very social.

Saw four on the mountain side today packing burlap bags. Which is unusual around here, it is usually horses.

Any idea what they can carry weight wise?

I think I read somewhere that can carry like 25 percent of their weight, my question is how the heck do you weigh a llama?
