Field fencing will work fine, it's what we used when we first got them before we got the cedar up, we just ran a strand of eletric on the inside to keep them from pushing on it

Our breeder on the other hand just ran them on two strands of electric, the cows never go near that corn

That's interesting. I am thinking we could do field fencing with wooden posts every other or every 2 t posts. Maybe that is looking for trouble. I am trying to figure out how much the cedar fencing would be per foot so I can price this out. Looks like the little Kubota may need a post hole digger next year.

Another option if you have any rocks on your land, I am thinking of doing this in the woods, use a medium duty t-post in the middle, wrap with 4x4 wire and then fill with rocks, no digging and the t-post will give lateral strength and it would look pretty sweet

We have a lot of rocks, I used them at the base of the lean-to, but man that is a lot of work.

So it appears Google Maps can calculate distances. Just right click on the map where you want to start and select 'Measure Distance'.

This is a lot of fencing. The main square, without the little slice on the bottom, shows to be ~2.75 acres. From the Tractor Supply site, which I am sure is the most expensive way to go, using 2 16ft pine boards and 1 3.5" 6.5' tall post is $28 every 16 feet. That is over $5k worth of fencing. Yikes.

Electric might be the way to go. Setup a smaller paddock in the middle and run electric in that as well to get them use to it if they aren't already and then divide off with fiberglass rods and wire.

The kids would love that. Shocking! Some rough numbers for field fencing, t posts, and wood posts is somewhere in the $2k range.

That sounds a lot better, you have any cedar or black locust around that you could make your own posts from?

No. From what it sounds like, an electric fence using high tensile wire is ~75% less than other fencing options. Might be the way we need to go. I need to think it through -- I always thought it would be nice for the kids to be able to feed and pet the cows through the fencing -- but if it is electric than that is out.
