Not really, the bad part of the way our property sits is we only have a few access points, the side gate which would be impossible to back the trailer up to there and the drive through under the workshop.
The plan at this point is to take all the fencing we have by the pond.
Run that from the barn to the workshop, creating a chute to run them up.
I am going to use the wood to close off the side with the posts.
Once we get them into that area we can close the gate and the boys will have no where to go besides up the ramp into the trailer. I just need to close off the space between the trailer and the building with something. They love carrots, so I will just carry a bag up into the trailer and sit and wait, once they are in there the others can close the ramp behind them and I will just pop out the side door.
Well, on paper anyways.
Well we decided to move the wood, I didn't want any of it falling and spooking the cows.
Hopefully we have no more rain so it should be good under the eaves.
We ripped out the fencing, seemed we had a few quacking visitors, ours still haven't flown away.
Started building the chute, the ground was a little frozen so I am going to need to park the tractor against the middle for support. We bolted the ends to the buildings so they shouldn't go anywhere.
I was 2 sections short so I ran to the farm store to pick some up and when I got back my brother was putting up the boards against the posts.
Uh, what are you doing?
What?
I was thinking of doing something a little more cleaner and making it permanent.
Well we can take it down and fix it.
Just leave it.
So we filled in the side gaps with boards and plywood bracing the boards behind the wheels.
I had one 6 foot fence that we used to brace against the other side.
I think it's going to work, everyone is suppose to be here around 8 am to get them loaded, they are still calling for 6-12 inches of snow tonight so this should be fun! If I remember my go-pro I will record the success or failure.
Well it went better than expected. I was concerned about them being spooked with so many people out and about and it seems my fears were correct. But we got them moved out of the barn alright.
My sister in law took charge of moving them up from the rear end while I sat in the trailer calling for them.
Took about 15 minutes and they were loaded up.
The drive wasn't bad, only hit a few bad patches of snow.
Got them unloaded, Marco was stressed, he mooed once, he never moos.
We picked our cuts of meat, I told them I wanted to save the brain and hides, they said they couldn't do the brains due to the USDA inspector and the hides would be an extra 60 dollars to the killing fee. Seems they sell the hides to keep the fee down.
RIP little buddies.
I honestly think this might be the last time I raise an animal for food and switch to being a vegetarian.
I've had them almost two years and when I walked out of the house a little while ago the first thing I did was look back at the field for them. It's going to take a while to break that habit I think.
