Well it went better than expected. I was concerned about them being spooked with so many people out and about and it seems my fears were correct. But we got them moved out of the barn alright. My sister in law took charge of moving them up from the rear end while I sat in the trailer calling for them.
Took about 15 minutes and they were loaded up.
The drive wasn't bad, only hit a few bad patches of snow.
Got them unloaded, Marco was stressed, he mooed once, he never moos.
We picked our cuts of meat, I told them I wanted to save the brain and hides, they said they couldn't do the brains due to the USDA inspector and the hides would be an extra 60 dollars to the killing fee. Seems they sell the hides to keep the fee down.
RIP little buddies.
I honestly think this might be the last time I raise an animal for food and switch to being a vegetarian.
I've had them almost two years and when I walked out of the house a little while ago the first thing I did was look back at the field for them. It's going to take a while to break that habit I think.
Thanks Gravel, it hit me pretty hard when we first started raising pigs 5 years ago, after that first year it got easier but I don't know if it's because these were our first cows, their personalities or just the length of the time we had them but today was pretty difficult and I wasn't expecting it.
My wife and I decided we were going to take this year off from raising animals anyways, there will be plenty of meat for a while. Maybe my thoughts will change over the next year.

Not even my cows and I have avoided this thread the last week or so due to how it makes me feel. 🙁 Like I have said in the past for whatever reason rabbits chickens and turkeys " the turkeys straight out bothered me a few days after" do not really bother me but I could never do pigs cows and goats.
Id rather support a local beef farmer and let him do all that nasty part of the circle of life. Like Gravel Road said maybe its an age thing?

Always have had a Hard Time putting a animal down for any reason. When I was a kid we really didn't have a lot of money...I had to put my childhood dog down when I was 13 or 14...even dug the hole...there was no money for a Vet back then. To this day I can't stand to think of 'Where the Red Fern Grows".
