Note to self read all the instructions before you do anything.  Why the heck would they not just make a solid mt3 arbor instead of making you put in a plug so it does not get locked in the tailstock.

one thing has been bugging me and taking a ton of time over the past couple days is the settings for the spindles on the x and z, they are both set for .001

but when I was turning on the x it was showing .200 for a full turn it was showing .100 on the z for the turn

this was driving me nuts so I called smithy and asked what the heck was going on, they asked if the dro was set to lathe?

The what?

Turn it off and turn it back on, it will tell you what it is set for.

Yep

When you turn on the x in the lathe mode it is adding .001 from each side so it adjusts for that and shows you the total depth of cut, mind blown again. So he walked me through changing to milling and everything works good.

On a side note, one of the biggest complaints with 3 in 1 machines I am seeing on different forums is that the headstock floats too much through the milling function, they normally recommend buying a shopsmith because it has one extra feature, it has a cross beam that ties the headstock into the bed

so I am looking at the headstock and there are holes that are tapped for the dro

and there are holes tapped into the bed which is where the cnc mount would go I believe

I could fabricate the same thing and run it behind the dro

anyone seen a mod like this before?

For the DRO, hadn't even remembered till you mentioned it but that'll help when you're measuring Diameter vs Radius.

For the mod, don't see why it wouldn't do the trick. That was my one hesitation when you brought up the 3 in 1 because your Z is normally controlled along gibs for CNC mills and the bed is controlled along gibs for manual mills. I believe for yours it is just an extension of the spindle axle, correct?

yes, one of the other complaints is that once you adjust your height with the column and since it is a round column stock it throws off your tram, I have been playing with layouts for milling over the last couple days and there is about 6 inches of travel with the quill so I would think adjusting the main column should be pretty minimal and readjusting for your vice tram shouldn't be that bad

holy crap metal is expensive, I stopped at the supply store to price out some 4"x4"x3 foot soft steel to make the dies for my press, figured it would be a perfect project for my first one with the milling machine, they want 389 dollars!

Time to hit up the scrapyard and see what they have.
