I've got access to an upright sander. Unfortunately the planer that I have access to only has about an 18" wide mouth.
Recommendations for the upright sander and the planer? If I'm going to advance my skills with woodworking, I might as well do it right.
I was eyeing a ryobi miter saw because it had pull out slides but I am liking this idea of the built up bench. Good first project for the saw.

Any of the above cuts I can throw through the planer and booth sander (I think) for you if you want.
A fair bit of the middle section is best to just cut out. Get some knife handle blanks from it. Top right cut would make a sweet stool or smaller side table. Bottom right my wife is asking me to actually make something. Big chunk, guessing it is solid burl.

Looks like a beautiful piece to start with.
The larger of the unclaimed pieces looks great! Or if that doesn't fit, as you pointed out, I can make a small side table. While the end grain of burled wood is very fascinating, what I love most is the natural edge.
The ruts don't worry me at all. Either fill with metal as you said or put a piece of glass on top. Again, another feature of the burled wood that I love.

I'll leave the middle section on the big burl piece then. It should give you a burl edge on the piece and if you carefully pick off the bark you should have some nice live edge that shows from the top.
That is around 2 feet by 2 feet for the dimensions. If you want me to just do the middle cut in let me know.
Going to be milling some crotch wood tomorrow if you want I can push it around then.
I'm day to day right now for a departure date for work.
