those minitrucks are japanese and made by a number of manufacturers, isuzu, suburu, suzuki, etc. they have basically quad engines 660's , get about 40-50 mpg, and are bulletproof. they are also available for less than 8-9 k on average. apparently the japanese insurance rates go up as the vehicle ages so they ship these things with varying mileage 10,000 -80,000 over in crates. they seem really small, but big guys can fit in them and they are not built for comfort anyway. there are so many configurations on these as well, dump trucks, winches , lifts, ext cab, van version. Obviously its not the be all , end all for vehicles but for a homestead it would be worth its weight in gold.

Those minitrucks are made by Isuzu, right?

chia, I agree about the Ford trucks. Lots of aftermarket parts.

I know a guy that rebuilds and sells the old FJ cruisers, Internationals, and old Broncos. I am always stopping by his shop when I'm back in Michigan to see what he's got going. Might pick one up someday.

I guess the first question would be what are your needs? Do you have a family, or is it just you? Does it have to be a truck, or would a jeep or SUV work? Where are you bugging out to (if at all)? Will you need 4wd? What kind of range are you looking to get out of it? Do you have a fuel preferance?

I just bought a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser that will be my SHTF vehicle, if it hits the fan before I can pick up a dedicated bug out vehicle. It's probably not the best for an emp scenario, but it should be fine for anything else. It's got pleanty of room for my family and gear, it does very well offroad, and it gets decent mpg.

My dedicated BOV will be a Suzuki Samurai, hopefully with a VW tdi diesel engine swap. Samurais are pretty small, but they're cheap, easy to work on, and damn near unstoppable offroad.

In your price range, I'd say look at a Samurai if you can work with a small vehicle (you could always add an offroad trailer for more storage), or a 1980's Toyota pick up.
