I like the 70's era Ford trucks. If you can find one from the South, overhaul it with a new engine and parts, it'd last a while, there's no plastic, and its easy to fix. I had a 77' F-150 custom that only had 84k original miles on it. Picked it up for 2k. LOVED IT. Sold it in the divorce but I WILL get another one.

I guess the first question would be what are your needs? Do you have a family, or is it just you? Does it have to be a truck, or would a jeep or SUV work? Where are you bugging out to (if at all)? Will you need 4wd? What kind of range are you looking to get out of it? Do you have a fuel preferance?

I just bought a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser that will be my SHTF vehicle, if it hits the fan before I can pick up a dedicated bug out vehicle. It's probably not the best for an emp scenario, but it should be fine for anything else. It's got pleanty of room for my family and gear, it does very well offroad, and it gets decent mpg.

My dedicated BOV will be a Suzuki Samurai, hopefully with a VW tdi diesel engine swap. Samurais are pretty small, but they're cheap, easy to work on, and damn near unstoppable offroad.

In your price range, I'd say look at a Samurai if you can work with a small vehicle (you could always add an offroad trailer for more storage), or a 1980's Toyota pick up.

I do have a family, but I have an SUV, so if I have to bug out I'd probably take that. This would mainly be for a stay put scenario where I'd need something to haul materials and look a bit crappier than my 2011 SUV. I'm in the Northeast, so 4WD is a must. Not looking for lots of range. Main concerns are that it be simple and easy to fix/maintain. I'm not sure about fuel. Diesel would be nice, but they're so much more expensive.

I definitely want a full size pick up, something with plow capability too.

I found a 1986 dodge 150 short bed on Craigslist.. it has 50,000 miles that is 85% restored (not sure what that means). It has a 318 v8

Guy is asking 5k but seems negotiable, it comes with a plow, so that's a bonus.. Can anyone tell me about this thing?

I have a 1995 landrover discovery that I've had for about 8 years. Don't drive it much so the miles are low at 130k. I keep it for the 4wd. I also have a 04' 2500hd GMC diesel truck that I love it has a service body and a tommy gate. The rover takes high octane gas with very crappy gas mileage. I get 17 mpg with the diesel with out any computer mods.

I would prob choose the diesel to bug out in, it has a generator built into one of the tool boxes...but i think diesel would be hard to find when SHTF.

If you dont mind me asking, where in the Northeast are you? If you want a farm truck for farm work, there's plenty up here for short money. That Dodge could be a good deal imo but it depends on what the 15% that is left to be finished is.

EMP - so the earlier the better for the most part. Correct?

I have a 1996 GMC 1500 that is my beater/work/dump truck. I have had to do a decent amount of work to it - electrically - my guess is that it wouldn't fair well for your scenario. I got it a couple years ago, extended cab, under 100k, for around 5k.

As far as your last post, I guess it depends on what his definition of 85% restored is. I grew up in the rural midwest and I can tell you that it was not a popular truck around here. The plow is a nice touch and adds some value - same with the low miles, but it could also be an indicator that the vehicle was only used to plow snow - which isn't the best as far as longevity of equipment.
