I'd ask if it has been used as a plow truck. He could easily lie, but if he's honest and says yes, I'd be wary. Like chia said, trucks used strictly for plowing can be hell for maintenance. Check the undercarraige for rust.
I've never heard a bad word uttered about the older Toyota trucks.

Yup. Those earlier small Toyota trucks were something else, but bigger folks didn't fit well in them.
Honestly, the truck I see the most around here from the 80s, that is still on the road, is the F150. I am no mechanic, and I live in an area where it was basically Ford, Chevy, and Dodge or nothing else - just so you know. But I don't think you are going to find a truck with more aftermarket parts than the F150.

My folks bought a new International Scout in the early 70s. Shipped it over to the Philippines while my dad was in service. He made a couple thousand selling it to one of the locals. He loved it.
When we got back to the U.S. he picked up a 70's Jeep Cherokee. That thing died around 2000. Looked similar to this:
