Another thing to consider is off road ability vs on road.
As you all know anything you do to make a vehicle more capable off road reduces its on road performance.
If your goal is off road, the mention of the smaller vehicles makes a lot of sense.
If you have the idea to get to an area that is not easily reached or accessible by others, the small vehicle will make this more likely.
A good winch, and accessories (pulleys, D rings, chains or pull rope) can get a vehicle into areas that very few if any other people could reach in a vehicle. Plus in tight situations the aid of a winch can prevent damage or breakage to your vehicle, for example it just may save a drive shaft or an axle shaft in an off camber steep climb where traction is tough.
Whether you just want to go camping in secluded areas, or wait out tough situation until order is restored, with a bit of practice a properly equipped vehicle can get you and family into areas that probably 99% of the population can't reach by vehicle.
I've heard the trannies go in the Dodge's pretty often. No personal experience though. I prefer the F150's as well.
Have heard this, and experienced it as well.
Had a run of these in use across 15 states, like clockwork the transmissions failed about 150,000 to 180,000.
However, I am sure folks can point out similar issues or weak points with other brands.
Every Ford I have ever owned has had ball joint problems. My F150 is not exception.
