the handles in the picture are fine, they are insulated and as long as you are aware of the wire they are safe, they also make spring ones that collapse when you disconnect them like a slinky.

Easiest way to do it is to just set your gate right at their shelter and just stop the electric wire at the post the gate is mounted on

the pigs were easier as far as gating because the electric was so low that we just stepped right over it.

other option would be to just set two posts with a tubular gate between them, then run two separate runs of electric from the same charger

they make jumping clamps that we used last summer when we temporarily fenced in the cows before the cedar went in. We just piggy backed off the wire that was run inside the pig pen

OK, good to see. With the rotational grazing I am thinking there would be ~5 gates -- one to enter the corral area and 4 leading off the corral to each grazing sections. Whatever I go with I want it to be pretty easy since it would be repeated so many times.

are you thinking straight electric or are you going to run any other type of fencing?

Electric everywhere but a wall of the corral that would face the house so we could pet the cows, etc.

I was planning to run a small electric line out there for a small heat lamp, charger, light, etc. So I think I would go with a plug-in charger since I hear they can be so much more powerful.

Thoughts?

We use a gallagher S20 which put my brother in law to his knees.

http://www.tractorsu.....-energizer

Basically you want to figure out your distance for fencing and then get the largest joule output for that.

So for example our S20 is rated for 2 miles at .5 joules and cost $249

This 2 mile is only $31.99

http://www.tractorsu.....ce-charger

but it only outputs .05 joules and is only for small light haired animals

this 10 mile is $69.99 and outputs .5 joules but it is still really only rated for small animals due to the distance

http://www.tractorsu.....ce-charger

this 3 mile is $74.99 and outputs .5 joules and is rated for large animals

http://www.tractorsu.....-energizer

but I would spend the extra $15 and get this 6 mile that outputs 1 joule that gives you room to expand

So basically it boils down to your budget, how much fence you need and if you can run electric out there for cheaper than $160

And I would have several grounds along your fencing, improper grounding is the biggest reason for electric fence failure. Also, electric fence is a mental barrier, not a physical one. Once an animal loses the fear, now you have a dilemma on your hands.
