Bingo. The awesome part is having replaceable carbide inserts in case you chip one. That and getting one with say 8 inserts allows you to "shell out" a piece. You may be able to find a used cutter and just buy some new inserts.

I picked up some fly cutters the other day, hope to test them today and see how they help with removing the scale

I believe that the Grizzly gunsmith lathe is exactly what we had in our shop before going with a CNC lathe. Great machine and you can mount a myriad of chucks on there. Can't remember any real problems that we had except that the paint on the drip tray peeled up in no time with whatever coolant we were using. I used the thing to cut threads on an optical lens at one point and the finish was butter smooth. Super rigid lathe. If I recall, we changed the gear oil about once a month but that was with heavy use. Also, switching between metric and standard for threading is pretty easy as the cover on the left comes off and you just turn a few gears around.
